Nightwish ringtones

We bought a replacement cell phone yesterday. When we were registering it online we took a peek to the ringtones out of curiosity. We are not really into cell phone stuff, so we couldn't believe they had "Amaranth" and "Bye Bye Beautiful" to download!
Of course, Amaranth is now our main sound for calls. A shame they didn't have The Siren or Dark Chest of Wonders, though :)

Can I have your thoughts on this?

I have been following this thread in this Nightwing video on Youtube:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=dfFVfn_zsdo

What is your input in this matter? Here is the question:
When going to see someone live (Nightwish or any other group or musician), do you like to hear the songs as they are in the CD (even if that means having layering/ sampling or whatever), or do you prefer that they sound different, because it's a concert and what the musicians are playing is what we should hear?

My answer to my question is this: As one of the Youtube users says, it's magical to be in the same room as the artist we admire and being there to share the energy and the enthusiasm is intoxicating. But we are there because we admire them as musicians, right? I want to HEAR the music, not just see them on stage with lots of layers of choruses and strings that are not even there. I prefer to renounce to these layers of music to hear them really playing. That is what a CONCERT is about, that's why it's called concert. It's about music. Not stage presence. If I want to hear the songs as I know them I'll stay home and play the CD over and over while I am staring to a picture of them until I go blind.

Picture this: you entry on a theater to see a concert of Beethoven's work. But when you go there, they tell you that they had no money to pay someone to play the piano and its sound is going to be layered from a record. Won't you feel cheated?

To me, going to a rock concert is no different. The presence of the artists on stage is not good enough for me. If I don't see on stage what I hear in the speakers I feel cheated. If you don't have the money to have chorus and strings, keep the songs simple. If you can't do that, then you are no (good) musician.

As for the person who says that if you don't like what they do live then you are not a fan; I believe you can be a fan and not like everything that comes from your favorite artist.
Most of us are dancers, and we have said frequently that, although we like to hear compliments (who doesn't?), we like to know what we have to improve. If we are only told that we are amazing no matter what, how could we grow as artists and persons? Even more, if someone said to me that I am the best no matter what, I would believe that the person talking to me has no criteria at all to judge my work and he/she is talking from ignorance and only to please me. I don't believe that that is what a true fan would do. Just my 2 cents.

Your turn.

...but the "End of an Era" DVD is awesome!! Hubby and I recently bought it, and we absolutely love it.
I don't usually like to see concerts, I prefer to just hear the music, but I find myself watching this one over and over. I enjoyed too the little documentary that is on the extras.
Anyway, if you don't have it yet, go for it!!

Tarja Gone

Dear Tarja,

It`s time to choose whether the story of Nightwish ends here or whether it will still continue an undetermined period of time. We`ve been working with this creation for 9 years and we are not ready to give up yet. Nightwish is a way of life, something to live for, and we`re certain we can`t let it go.

Equally certain is the fact that we cannot go on with you and Marcelo any longer. During the last year something sad happened, which I`ve been going over in my head every single day, morning and night. Your attitude and behavior don`t go with Nightwish anymore. There are characteristics I would never have believed to see in my old dear friend. People who don`t talk with each other for a year do not belong in the same band.

We are involved in an industry where the business-side of things is a necessary evil and something to worry about all the time. We are also a band which has always done music from the heart, because of friendship and the music itself. The mental satisfaction should always be more important than money! Nightwish is a band, it`s an emotion.

To you, unfortunately, business, money, and things that have nothing to do with those emotions have become much more important. You feel that you have sacrificed yourself and your musical career for Nightwish, rather than thinking what it has given to you.

This attitude was clearly shown to me in the two things you said to me in an airplane in Toronto: ”I don`t need Nightwish anymore.” and ”Remember, Tuomas, that I could leave this band at any time, giving you only one day`s warning in advance”. I can`t simply write any more songs for you to sing.

You have said yourself that you are merely a ”guest musician” in Nightwish. Now that visit ends and we will continue Nightwish with a new female vocalist. We`re sure this is an equally big relief to you as it is for us. We have all been feeling bad long enough.

You told us that no matter what, the next Nightwish album will be your last one. However, the rest of us want to continue as long as the fire burns. So there`s no sense in doing that next album with you, either.

The four of us have been going over this situation countless times and we have realized that this is the thing we want to do in life. It´s all we can do. In December 2004, in Germany, you said that you will never tour again for more than two weeks at a time. You also said that we can forget about U.S. and Australia because the fees and the sizes of venues are too small.

In interviews I`ve mentioned that if Tarja leaves, that would be the end of the band. I understand that people will think this way. Nightwish is, however, a scenery of my soul and I`m not ready to let go because of one person. A person who wants to focus her creativity to somewhere else, a person whose values don`t match mine.

We were never bothered by the fact that you didn`t participate in writing/arranging songs, you never in 9 years came to rehearse the songs with us before going to the studio. Not the fact that while on tour you always wanted to fly, separately from us with your husband. Not the fact that you are an undisputable front image of the band.

We accepted and felt ok about everything except greed, underestimating the fans, and breaking promises. It was agreed by the five of us that Nightwish would be the priority in everything that we do during 2004-2005. Still so many things were more important to you. The ultimate example being the already sold-out show in Oslo, which you wanted to cancel because you needed to rehearse for your solo concerts, meet frieds and go to the movies. Those were the words Marcelo used in an e-mail explaining the cancellation. This being just one example of so many. I couldn`t think of a worse way of being selfish and dismissing our fans.

Nightwish is a way of life and a job with many obligations. To each other and to the fans. With you we can`t take care of those duties anymore.

Deep within we don`t know which one of you drove us to this point. Somehow Marcelo has changed you from the lovely girl you were into a diva, who doesn`t think or act the way she used to. You are too sure of your irreplaceableness and status.

It`s obvious that you blame your stress and misery on us four. And you think we don`t respect or listen to you. Belive us; We have always had the uppermost respect towards you as a wonderful vocalist and as a friend. And very often during the past couple of years the plans were made according to your decisions only. You were always the only one who wanted more money from the shows. This ”compensation and more money from everything” –attitude is the fact that we are most disappointed of!

We wish that from now on you will listen to your heart instead of Marcelo. Cultural differences combined with greed, opportunism and love is a dangerous combination. Do not wither yourself.

This decision is not something we are especially proud of but you gave us no choice. The gap between us is too wide. And the decision is made by us four unanimously. We are beyond the point where things could be settled by talking.

All the best for your life and career,

Tuomas

Nightwish Concert Review

Okay, so I just saw the new Nightwish last night at the House of Blues in Los Angeles, and let me tell you that it was absolutely HORRIBLE. Yes, you heard me right. I was expecting Nightwish-lite, but I didn't expect it to be such a DISASTER. It's as if Nightwish gave birth to the Elephant Man--it was that bad.

They should have just stuck to the material from their new album, with a few sing a longs that the new singer could handle, but instead they attempt to do some classics. I'm talking about songs like Dark Chest of Wonders, Ever Dream, and Wishmaster. They BUTCHERED it!!! The new singer couldn't hit many of the notes so she either took it one octave down or she screamed through it. It was AWFUL. It was so obvious she was straining and in pain.

And the band was so unenergetic. It was pitiful. They had to in order for the vocals of this new singer to come through, but it was really, really sad.

This band is only a shadow of its former self. If I had known it would be this bad, I wouldn't have even gone. I don't think I'll ever go see them again unless they make some major changes or reunite with Tarja, but that will probably be like 20 years for now. Argh!!!!!

Interestingly, after the show, someone was handling out fliers for Tarja's new album. Hmmm... I've heard the I Walk Alone single, and I like it WAAAAYYYY better than the new Nightwish. It's at least a good song.

Which makes me wonder what to do with this tribe. Maybe I should turn it into a Tarja fan tribe.

By the way, is there anyone here who likes the new Nightwish?

Name:
Anette Olzon

Birthday:
21 June 1971

Place of residence:
Sweden

Hobbies:
Exercising, clothes, reading books and taking long walks in the wild.

Vices:
None ;=)

Musical background:
I was raised in a musical family and I've been singing since childhood. My mom also forced me to play the oboe for 8 years! I toured constantly with my mom and her band in my childhood, sometimes I even sang on stage with them.

After I turned 13, I started competing in several talent shows. I joined my first real band when I was 17, it was a cover band and all the other musicians were older than me. After playing cover songs, I joined a band called Alyson Avenue, first just as a studio singer, later as their leading lady. We've released 2 albums since 2000.

At the age of 21, I played the leading role in a rock opera/musical called "Gränsland" in Helsingborg. After that I got in to the Balettakademien in Gothenburg. In addition to the already mentioned, I've been in several other bands over the years, I've sung in choirs, done studio work for various projects and I've even occasionally been a wedding singer. Recently I sang a duet with Michael Bormann (ex-Jaded Heart-singer) on his album "Conspiracy". During my singing career I've sung nearly every kind of music that there is!

In my earlier days I took singing lessons at the Copenhagen Music Conservatorie, in Helsingör, Denmark with a private teacher. Nowadays, when its needed, I take lessons from a private teacher at the Malmö Music University.

Equipment:
Whatever microphone and in-ear system the NW-crew fix for me.

Idols in music:
I don't have any real "idols" nowadays, but I do look up to all musicians that are humble and do not think too much of themselves.

Idols in life:
People that are themselves, despite what other people think.

Life philosophy:
Live your life fully - love, laugh and cry with all your heart, life doesn't last forever...

Place you would like to go:
Oh, there are so many!! Lapland, Australia, New Zealand, Iceland, Egypt....

What makes you laugh:
Oh, many things... it's easy to make me laugh... but mainly funny tv-series like Jackass and Friends and of course Emppu and Ewo..

First record you bought:
Well the first one was, of course since I am Swedish, an ABBA album...

All time top 5 albums:
Can't name just 5...

Killing time on tour:
We'll see... But it'll most likely be reading, watching movies and playing games.

Preparation for a show:
I do my vocal warm-up and drink some green tea with honey. I always need to spend the last 10 minutes before a show on my own to focus properly, to prepare myself mentally and to relax.

Strangest experience on tour:
I do not have the kind of tour memories that the guys have since I've only done concerts in Scandinavia, but I still remember the old days with my first cover band Take Cover, when we played at a motorcycle party somewhere in the south of Sweden. They had strippers, and the crowd was screaming "Show us your boobs" etc. to me.. After the gig, when we should've collected the payment, some MC-guys started to fight with the guys in our band and we had to drive away with a full-loaded car and its attached trailer as fast as we could.. I was scared... Brr...
They also destroyed one of our big speakers by pouring beer into it...
Grrr...

Worst nightmare on stage:
Losing my voice, not being able to sing as good as I'd want...

Favorite Nightwish song:
All the songs from the new album "Ever Dream", "Higher than Hope".

Worst nightmare in general:
Losing my voice and that something would happen to my closest family members or to my friends.

Favorite band/musician:
There are too many!

Favorite book:
I have many favourites, but I love Paolo Coelho's books, mainly "Veronica decides to die". I also loved Dan Brown's "Angels and Demons".

Favorite drink:
Sparkling mineral water with some nice added taste, vanilla vodka and cider.

Favorite food:
Many - Chinese, sushi, Thai, Mexican...

Favorite animal:
Cats and horses.

Favorite movie:
"Titanic", "Gladiator", "Braveheart" and many more...

Favorite TV show:
I don't watch that much TV, but I love "Desperate Housewives" and "Friends"!

Dumbest question you have ever been asked:
None, there are no dumb questions.. 'cause if the person asking the question feels that she/he wants to know it, it's not a dumb question for them.

So this tribe now has a new moderator--me!

Anyway, do you guys think Nightwish will be able to find a new female vocalist who can fill Tarja's shoes?

And do you think they should pick a known singer or an unknown?

My ex-girlfriend was into Tarja Turunen, and the rest of the band, that is how I got hooked on their cheesy Finnish lyrics (joking).

I think the band is great, and has great sound.
