Nightwish Concert Review

Okay, so I just saw the new Nightwish last night at the House of Blues in Los Angeles, and let me tell you that it was absolutely HORRIBLE. Yes, you heard me right. I was expecting Nightwish-lite, but I didn't expect it to be such a DISASTER. It's as if Nightwish gave birth to the Elephant Man--it was that bad.

They should have just stuck to the material from their new album, with a few sing a longs that the new singer could handle, but instead they attempt to do some classics. I'm talking about songs like Dark Chest of Wonders, Ever Dream, and Wishmaster. They BUTCHERED it!!! The new singer couldn't hit many of the notes so she either took it one octave down or she screamed through it. It was AWFUL. It was so obvious she was straining and in pain.

And the band was so unenergetic. It was pitiful. They had to in order for the vocals of this new singer to come through, but it was really, really sad.

This band is only a shadow of its former self. If I had known it would be this bad, I wouldn't have even gone. I don't think I'll ever go see them again unless they make some major changes or reunite with Tarja, but that will probably be like 20 years for now. Argh!!!!!

Interestingly, after the show, someone was handling out fliers for Tarja's new album. Hmmm... I've heard the I Walk Alone single, and I like it WAAAAYYYY better than the new Nightwish. It's at least a good song.

Which makes me wonder what to do with this tribe. Maybe I should turn it into a Tarja fan tribe.

By the way, is there anyone here who likes the new Nightwish?

Okay, it just shows how taste is subjective. Which are your favorite songs? What do you like about it?

Well in general, my favourite songs are "Nemo", "Over the Hills and Far Away", "Wish I Had an Angel", and "Phantom of the Opera". From the new album, my favourites are "Poet and the Pendulum", "Whoever Brings the Night", "7 Days to the Wolves", and "Master Passion Greed".

What has always drawn me to Nightwish are the lyrics. Tuomas is a lyrical genius. And as long as that doesn't change, then I will still be a loyal fan. As a good friend of mine said, "Its not just the voice that makes Nightwish so amazing; it has been, and always will be, Tuomas's lyrics."

I had the honor of seeiing Nightwish a few years ago at Slims in SF, Got the loft seating with included STEAK DINNER! THe show was AWSOME. Definatly one of my favorite concert experiences. I knew that when Tarja left, nightwish was over, and hearing the new girl only confirms it.

I expected them to try and move on, doing new stuff. I knew that if they ever tried to do any classics, they would fail. FAIL! I feel bad for them. Nothing worse that having your head cutt off and being forced to watch yourself bleed to death unable to stop your eventual retirement. Most unfortunate indeed.

My friend who is a big Nightwish fan (it was his favorite band) was all depressed. He saw them during the same tour as you did down here in L.A. and Orange County. He said it was the best. But you should hear what he thinks of them now. He blasted the show. He had nightmares about it afterwards (he kept dreaming that Marco had turned into a cockroach).

The thing is though, there are people who like the new Nightwish. I was talking to one guy at the show who loved it. I have noticed that people who like the new Nightwish tend to be younger (in their teens) and those who don't like their new sound are older. Which makes me wonder how long their popularity will last. I think their younger fans will eventually grow out of them as they get older, and the older fans who liked the sophisticated sound will bail on them, so eventually they will be left without a fan base. This is a huge mistake.

They should have played every song on the new album, plus songs like Over the Hills and Far Away and the ballads. Wish I had an Angel and Nemo they played and the new singer could handle that. But no ballads! They didn't even play the one from the new album, Eva. It's like they were out to prove that they are still hard. But this new girl's voice is better suited for the softer stuff. Instead, they tried to do these intense songs that this new singer just couldn't pull off. Whenever she was getting to a part that I knew was out of her range, I would cringe. And sure enough, what came out of her mouth didn't sound too good. How embarrassing!

      Anyway, here's the setlist:

      Bye Bye Beautiful
      Amaranth
      Dark Chest
      Everdream
      Whoever Brings The Night
      The Poet And The Pendulum
      Sahara
      Higher Than Hope
      Nemo
      7 Days To The Wolves
      Wishmaster
      Wish I Had An Angel

Check out their latest video for Bye Bye Beautiful: video.google.com/videoplay

This is probably the best that this lineup can do. As you can see, it's a completely different band now. The problem is when they switch between new Nightwish and old Nightwish. It just doesn't work. After going into two old songs after opening with two new songs, I was completely thrown off and couldn't get back into it. Not to mention I kept worrying about when they would play the next old song and if the new singer could pull it off.

I felt exactly the same when I saw them in Copenhagen. Despite all the flashy pyrotechnics, they were unenergetic, uncharismatic and just....poor. To give Annette her due, she sounded good as she did in the studio....but I do not think she has an amazing voice. Good, better than average...but not amazing.

For old times sake I'm going to see them on my home turf (England) with friends. I can only hope, really.
