Can I have your thoughts on this?

I have been following this thread in this Nightwing video on Youtube:

youtube.com/watch

What is your input in this matter? Here is the question:
When going to see someone live (Nightwish or any other group or musician), do you like to hear the songs as they are in the CD (even if that means having layering/ sampling or whatever), or do you prefer that they sound different, because it's a concert and what the musicians are playing is what we should hear?

My answer to my question is this: As one of the Youtube users says, it's magical to be in the same room as the artist we admire and being there to share the energy and the enthusiasm is intoxicating. But we are there because we admire them as musicians, right? I want to HEAR the music, not just see them on stage with lots of layers of choruses and strings that are not even there. I prefer to renounce to these layers of music to hear them really playing. That is what a CONCERT is about, that's why it's called concert. It's about music. Not stage presence. If I want to hear the songs as I know them I'll stay home and play the CD over and over while I am staring to a picture of them until I go blind.

Picture this: you entry on a theater to see a concert of Beethoven's work. But when you go there, they tell you that they had no money to pay someone to play the piano and its sound is going to be layered from a record. Won't you feel cheated?

To me, going to a rock concert is no different. The presence of the artists on stage is not good enough for me. If I don't see on stage what I hear in the speakers I feel cheated. If you don't have the money to have chorus and strings, keep the songs simple. If you can't do that, then you are no (good) musician.

As for the person who says that if you don't like what they do live then you are not a fan; I believe you can be a fan and not like everything that comes from your favorite artist.
Most of us are dancers, and we have said frequently that, although we like to hear compliments (who doesn't?), we like to know what we have to improve. If we are only told that we are amazing no matter what, how could we grow as artists and persons? Even more, if someone said to me that I am the best no matter what, I would believe that the person talking to me has no criteria at all to judge my work and he/she is talking from ignorance and only to please me. I don't believe that that is what a true fan would do. Just my 2 cents.

Your turn.

I'd like a live show to be as live as possible. That's the whole point. I don't want to go to a show and just hear a recording.

At the same time, some things are hard to recreate live. And some background music would make the songs fuller. So I'm not against it, but I think it should be kept to a bare minimum. Only if the songs sound incomplete should it be added.

Another possibility is for bands to change the arrangement when they play live. I've seen some bands do it. But I guess it requires reworking.

??? So, if Nightwhish did an all accoustic show you would be OK with that?

"??? So, if Nightwhish did an all acoustic show you would be OK with that?"

Absolutely! I believe it could be very interesting to hear the songs without the sampling. I agree that a whole concert made that way could be too much. But what about 5 or 6 songs in the whole concert? Would you have a problem with that?
I have seen big names (and I mean BIG) in the rock scene to do acoustic versions of their most famous songs. Only a guitar and a voice. Maybe a bass too. And they were awesome.
Nobody is saying that kind of versions are better or worse than the originals. Simply different.

And please, have in mind that I specified that no matter if it is Nightwish or any other group or musician.

I can see songs like Nemo played acoustic, but others like Kingslayer and Wishmaster? I don't think so...

Maybe if I am more precise would you get my point?

I have seen recently a video of a Within Temptation concert. They were playing "What have you done". In the CD, they had a guest singer (I believe Keith Caputo) singing some lines. Well, Keith Caputo was not in the concert. They simply put a recording of him singing the lines.
If you can't have Keith Caputo on stage, have another band member sing those lines. Or have the main singer sing them. Or don't sing them at all.
But please, don't use a recording!!

I saw Within Temptation live not too long ago. Could be that none of the other band members could sing. Dunno.

Anyway, I get your point. I think you are assuming that if we don't agree, we don't get your point. But that's not the case with me. I just don't feel as strong about it. Sorry.

Maple, I understand. No need to apologize. Since English it's not my first language I didn't know if what I was saying made sense to you guys. I am referring to the musical terminology. Probably the words I used were not the correct ones, musically speaking.
I appreciate you taking the time to answer. Thanks for your responses.
